Overview | Regional Contacts | DETA Training

Have you or your business been affected by changes in the defense industry?

Many businesses, especially manufacturers, impacted by shifting priorities in the defense industry have a difficult time because they do not have the structure in place to rapidly respond to changes in the external environment.  Many of them are utilizing the same production or manufacturing processes that were used 20 to 30 years ago. Since 1995, the NYS DETA program has assisted businesses in this situation, counseling thousands of individuals or companies in one-to-one sessions with small business owners; helping clients access nearly $100 million in capital and saving or creating more nearly 4,000 jobs.

DETA Advisors have a range of skills to help firms in need of redirection in terms of production, financing or marketing. Their goal is to equip small business owners with the information, analysis, tools, and management training to meet the challenge of today’s complex and evolving economy. Each DETA client is evaluated by his or her Advisor to determine assistance required and the best way to deliver services.

One of the features of SBDC’s innovative services thru the DETA program is a management audit that addresses three major functional areas: operations management, marketing management, and financial management. The audit evaluates the business and identifies strengths and weaknesses. It can provide valuable information and recommendations to improve a company’s productivity, competitiveness and profitability.

If your answer to any of the following questions is “Yes,” you are a candidate for DETA services.

  • I am a dislocated worker interested in starting my own business.
  • I am a small business owner in a region affected by changes in the defense industry.
  • I am a small business owner that formerly worked as a subcontractor in the defense industry and/or am interested in doing business with the government.
  • I am a large business owner looking for transition assistance for my dislocated workers and/or subcontractors.

Go to the Regional contacts page to find the DETA center in your region.
